Awujale rise Up a Committee On Ijebu Obas’ Burial Rites

The Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona has said that a 24-man committee would soon be inaugurated from the six local government areas in Ijebuland.
Oba Adetona said this while addressing some Christians and Muslim faithful who converged on his palace to kick-start the annual week-long prayer for him and his domain.
The traditional ruler however, said there is no custom or tradition in Ijebuland that supports the practice whereby corpses of traditional rulers are hijacked by traditional worshippers, otherwise called ‘Osugbos’.
The monarch, who said the actions of the traditional worshippers are an abomination, described members of Osugbo cult as bailiffs.
He explained that Osugbo is just an association, not a chieftaincy title or any cult to fear or reverence. It was gathered that the paramount ruler some years ago abolished the practice whereby demised kings were buried by some secret cult members who are often referred to as the Osugbos.
Also, since the abolishment, few Obas who joined their ancestors had been buried according to their faiths. According to the monarch, his latest move is to ensure that any king that joined his ancestors is given a befitting burial according to the faith such monarch practised while alive.
The monarch said the resolution was agreed on on December 28th , 2016. The committee is to meet with the members of Osugbo cult accused of hijacking corpses of deceased obas, collect and dispossess the family of some property on the pretence that they want to bury the monach according to what the tradition demanded.
